Funniest Man Alive

If you need some meaning in your life; this is THE blog: Ricky Gervais

Ricky about himself:
"Something of a late-starter, at least in terms of comedy, Ricky is well aware that his chosen route to success whilst preferable, was certainly not typical.

Born in Reading in the early sixties, he made it to university in London where he breezed his way through to a degree in philosophy. After a brief career in a pop band he dallied with the odd job here and there making ends meet before a longish stint running the entertainments at a students' union.

The long years of discos, pub quizzes and guitar bands were punctuated with brief dabblings in the music business. He managed a band called Suede for a bit (walking away shortly before they were signed), promoted a Queen tribute band and generally bothered music industry types with his unfocussed ambitions.

Following that came a portentous appointment with the then fledgling and unlicenced radio station Xfm. It was here that Ricky took on a new assitant, Stephen Merchant, who would later become co-writer/director of 'The Office'.

Although Ricky wasn't hired to be a broadcaster, he quite fancied giving it a go and a nightly programme was slotted into the schedule ready for the station's proper launch on 1 September 1997 (not the best choice of dates as it turned out).

Five nights a week plus the day-job is clearly too much for anyone to manage. And all that talking to do in between records? Obviously you need at least one other person involved to share the burden. So a lone late-night ten-hours became 120 minutes on a Sunday afternoon chatting to a mate. "I'm Ricky Gervais... obviously. With me; Steve Merchant". They've been doing it off and on ever since.
In 1998, Xfm was aquired by Capital Radio and format changes to Xfm saw Ricky free to explore his comedy talents in other media. A bit of sketch writing here and there, popping up on Radio 1 every so often, followed by first appearances on the TV;

Ricky wrote and starred in a one-off called 'Golden Years' about a businessman who is obsessed with becoming a David Bowie lookalike. Remember, write about what you know.

'The 11 O'Clock Show' - a topical comedy magazine series. Ricky adopts the persona of a half-knowledgable biggot to drop in on the regular team of presenters. An outrageous and refreshingly funny foil to the satirical Oxbridge pretentions of the show itself.

'Meet Ricky Gervais' came hot on the heels of Ricky's popularity in the 11 O'Clock Show. Concieved as a chat show with games, the structure mainly served to allow Ricky the opportunity to say rude words, make guests say rude words and make it all official by virtue of the fact that it was being shown on TV. That said, a running gag filmed and written by Ricky and Stephen Merchant as links between ad breaks showed a glimpse of what was to come.

The show finished in October 2000, but Ricky and Steve had already been developing their ideas for an office-based mock documentary, and months if not years of work would come to fruition on 9 July 2001 when the BBC aired the first episode of 'The Office'.

Twelve episodes and a two-part Christmas special later and The Office is consigned to broadcasting history as one of the most perfectly crafted comedy series in British TV ever. Showered with awards and critical acclaim the series' pivotal creation David Brent became a household name and so, of course, did Ricky.
Perhaps slightly embarrassed by the accolades and not having earned his comedy spurs by years of telling jokes to drunks in smoky bars up and down the country, Ricky put together a stand-up show to while away the evenings away from home during filming. The resulting tour, encompassing at least two theatres within a mile radius of his house, was a smash and must have dispelled any lingering doubts about doing live work as he's followed the 'Animals' show this year with a new show entitled 'Politics'. And it was a proper UK tour this time too with shows in as many as six places outside London.

With seven and a half hours of The Office produced in a three year period you wouldn't think there'd be time enough for anything else would you? But you'd be wrong of course. Voice-overs in ads, animated films and the like, small parts in films - generally for mates, a cameo role in an American TV series called 'Alias' plus regular appearances on top chat shows like 'Parkinson' and 'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross'. He even found time to take part in a four-week training regime culminating with him beating a minor celebrity in a televised boxing match.

In the run-up to Christmas this year, Ricky will be busy telling us about his new book - 'Flanimals'. Ostensibly aimed at younger readers, but the richness of the illustrations and the inventiveness of the text give it universal appeal.

DVDs of the Politics show and The Office Specials are also out for Christmas so expect to see lots of cardboard cut-outs of Ricky in stores over the next few weeks.

After that it'll be full steam ahead for 'Extras', his new TV series - more about that to come.

One last thing - many online biographies make reference to Ricky having worked as a pizza deliveryman. Just to put record straight, Ricky has not ever delivered a pizza... eaten, yes. Lots. Too many probably. But delivered them? Never."

Tom Ford - The Man!

Born in Texas in 1962, Tom Ford has become the most influential designer of the last decade.

Tom made his move to the Big Apple as a teenager and enrolled at the NY University, in Art History, before changing to take up Architecture at Parsons School of Design in New York.

In 1986 he joined the creative staff of the famous American designer Cathy Hardwick, and two years later he became the Design Director at Perry Ellis. By 1990 Tom had moved to Milan and joined the team at Gucci, as Women’s Wear Designer. Within two years he’d climbed the corporate ladder to become Gucci’s Creative Director.

After Gucci bought a controlling stake in Yves Saint Laurent, Ford was appointed creative director. Ford says the secret of his success is his energy, and he only sleeps around three hours a night. His celebrity fans include the likes of Madonna, Bianca Jagger and Trudie Styler!

Tom caused a bit of an advertising stir with the promotion for his M7 fragrance. The campaign featured naked model Samuel de Cubber in a full-frontal pose. But as Tom says: "Perfume is worn on the skin, so why hide the body? The M7 campaign is really pure, it’s a very academic nude. I wanted to show a man who represents a natural and relaxed image of male beauty".

Tom also hit the headlines with his sensational Gucci ad, featuring a naked woman whose bikini line has been waxed into the shape of the letter `G`.

In 2004, Ford parted company with Gucci, after a disagreement over his contract.

Tom Ford is now; Tom Ford!

Derek Trucks

The Derek Trucks Band highly anticipated sixth studio album, "Already Free", hits store shelves on 13 January.

Self-produced by Trucks in his home studio in Florida, it represents the band's natural evolution as they move forward integrating influences that span a variety of musical genres. Known for their blues roots, the group takes this album well beyond blues to incorporate the largers sounds of rock and soul.

Trucks said that, "this album was completely organic. We had no expectations. We just came down and started writing. Then one thing led to the next. I had all this time off so I just started calling up friends. And once the process started rolling and once we realized that we were onto something, we were writing tunes and all the sounds we were getting were amazing and it was starting to feel great. It felt like something was happening and we wanted to keep throwing musicians on the fire."

The band consists of Derek Turcks on guitar, Todd Smallie on bass, percussionist Count M'Buto, Yonrico Scott on drums, Kofi Burbridge on keyboards and vocalist Mike Mattison. The band was joined by pals like Doyle Bramhall II, Oteil Burbridge and Trucks' wife, Susan Tedeschi in the studio. Bramhall takes over vocal duties on two songs, "Maybe This Time" and "Our Love."

The first single from the album - a cover of "Down In The Flood" from Bob Dylan and The Band's "The Basement Tapes" was released 4 November. It has almost more relevance now post-Hurricane Katrina than when it was written in 1967. "I think it really turned out to be one of the most powerful tracks on the record. I think lyrically it's pretty timely. Crash on the levee, down in the flood, are so significant post-Katrina. There are some good metaphors, as there are in most Dylan tunes," says Trucks.

"Already Free" reflects all of Trucks' many influences and experiences, and highlights the quintessential Derek Trucks Band sound of mixing soulful vocals and expert guitar playing on what is poised to be the band's definitive album.

Morten Sangvik

My friend and colleague Morten Sangvik is one of Norway's most impressing authors, copy writers and last but not least dedicated fly fishers I have ever known.

This is one of his pieces from "Magasinet" by Dagbladet, enjoy:
(If you don't know the Norwegian language, to bad for you).

Nate Boguszewski

Documenting American life in candid, often revealing fashion, photographer Nate Boguszewski looks to tell complex stories in the space of a single frame. "One thing that delights me in any shot I take is ambiguity, the lies that a framing can craft," Boguszewski says. "A bit of confusion for the viewer—and sometimes for me—goes a long way in storytelling." That ambiguity is prevalent in much of his work. But he also captures subjects whose faces beam with blatant response, whether it's sadness or anger, confusion or great joy. Much of his work has a grimy Americana feel, an aesthetic Boguszewski attributes to the years spent watching his native city of Pittsburgh flounder. Formerly the art director at Deek magazine, in recent years Boguszewski has shot for Swindle, Next American City, and Philadelphia City Paper.

10 Best Songs About Cars

10. Chuck Berry - No Particular Place to Go. Chuck Berry made a whole career out of singin' about fast cars, pretty girls and having fun, and all three themes play prominently in this classic from 1964 in which young love is thwarted by a malfunctioning seat-belt. Same thing happened in a Camaro we once owned.

9. Rush - Red Barchetta. Lyricist and drummer extraordinaire Neil Peart is a hardcore motorcycle fanatic, but he's clearly spent some time behind the wheel. This track from 1981's Moving Pictures perfectly captures the imagery of tearing up the countryside in a vintage Ferrari.

8. Sammy Hagar - I Can't Drive 55. The national anthem of Gearhead Nation and a song that only sounds good blaring through a pair of 6x9 speakers. Bonus points because the video for this track, from 1984's VOA, featured a Ferrari.

7. The Beach Boys - 409. Everyone cites Little Deuce Coupe, but for our money, this B-side to 1962's Surfin' Safari is the best of the Boys' many car songs because nothing says "bad ass" like a mid-60s Chevy with lousy brakes and an obscenely large engine putting out 425 horsepower.

6. Ween - El Camino. Only a band so lovably weird as Ween would memorialize a car so lovably weird as the the El Camino - and do it in a song with a flamenco flavor. Extra points for references to those other great American cars with Latin names, the Toronado and the Cordoba. Brilliant, just like the rest of 1990's GodWeenSatan - The Oneness.

5. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Crosstown Traffic. A great song that uses a car as a metaphor, in this case for a girlfriend who's tying ol' Jimi down -- "just like crosstown traffic, all you do is slow me down." This track from 1969's Electric Ladyland is packed with metaphors, our favorite being "tire tracks all across your back, I can see you've had your fun." Ouch.

4. Golden Earring - Radar Love. We've all been there - driving all night, hands wet on the wheel, half-past four and shifting gears. This classic from 1973's Moontan is perfect for hauling ass on an open road in the dead of night. It's been covered by at least half a dozen band including, regrettably, White Lion, but the original still sounds great after 35 years.

3. Drive-By Truckers - Daddy's Cup. The old line about real musicians having day jobs could just as easily apply to auto racers, and this song from 2004's The Dirty South perfectly conveys what it's like to have grease under your nails, racing in your blood and dreams of glory in your head.

2. Sir Mix-A-Lot - My Hooptie. When you get right down to it, songs about bad-ass cars are as big a rock-n-roll cliche as sunburst Les Pauls. On 1989's Seminar, Sir Mix-A-Lot gave a shout-out to heaps. What makes it great is how easy it is to relate to: "Lifters tickin', accelerator's stickin', somethin' on my left-front wheel keeps clickin'." Sounds just like a Camaro we once owned.

1. Prince - Little Red Corvette. This song isn't really about a Corvette, it's - spoiler alert! - about a one-night stand. Prince wasn't the first to use a car as a metaphor for a woman and he won't be the last, but his catchy tune from the album 1999 will always rank among the best.

JM Summer Tour

Channel Hopper is a five disc 'best of' compilation from the 2008 Summer Tour. It contains one version of every song performed on the tour, totaling at 45 tracks, and 4 and a half hours of music.

Every show of the Summer 2008 tour was listened to in order to make the selections across these five discs. Once performances were selected, the lossless 'masters' were then re-mastered to create consistency across all of the audio. This included fade in/out of crowd noise and the mastering of audio levels. These re-masters were then kept in lossless, and encoded into mp3 once all of the tracks were complete.

Christian Zuzunaga

It is strange to think that not too long ago there were no such things as pixels. Before the invention of photography, artificial pixels (short for PICture ELements)simply did not exist. It wasn’t until the personal computer hit the mainstream did the word “pixel” become widely known outside of geeks, video/photographers and the CIA. Now that several generations of designers have never known a world without pixels, it was expected that this single common component of an image would find its way onto non traditional objects. Cristian Zuzunaga, a graduate from the UK’s Royal College of Arts, has designed this Pixel Couch that will be produced by Danish manufacturer Kvadrat and sold through Moroso. I wonder what it would look like from far away.

From Sir Isaac Newton to Pantone

Pure white light, such as sunlight, is composed of the visible colors. Sir Isaac Newton discovered this in 1666 by passing a beam of light through a prism.

There are literally millions of colors! But fortunately, they can be divided into just a few color families. And every color can be described in terms of having three main attributes: hue, saturation and brightness.

Hue is identified as the color family or color name (such as red, green, purple). Hue is directly linked to the color's wavelength.

Saturation, also called "chroma," is a measure of the purity of a color or how sharp or dull the color appears.

Brightness, also called "luminance" or "value," is the shade (darkness) or tint (lightness) of a color. Areas of an evenly colored object in direct light have higher brightness than areas in shadow.

Somebody Else's Phone

Wieden + Kennedy, London tells a tale of three phones in its "Supernova" campaign for Nokia.

If you found somebody else's phone, would you dare look at it? The question serves as the premise of Wieden + Kennedy, London's new integrated "Supernova" campaign for Nokia.

Launched today, the voyeuristic initiative focuses on three fictional characters—Anna, Luca and Jade—a group of hipster types that relish the social life and capture their every move on their Nokia 7610 handsets. But rather than keep their activities private, W+K has unveiled a microsite to tell the stories of these mobile-obsessed characters through the text/video messages in each of their phones. "The microsite is basically the hub of all the [campaign] activity that's going on," says W+K, London digital producer Clemens Brandt. "It's nothing more than a tool to consume the story, though there was a lot of effort put into this microsite so that the audience could understand it immediately."

Visitors can view the evolving messages, music and contact lists in Anna, Luca and Jade's phones and basically keep up with their stories in real-time. To achieve this, W+K, London is feeding content 24/7 into the microsite to further the tales, which will unfold over six weeks. Along with the microsite, W+K added another layer of interaction by creating Facebook pages for the protagonists. "What we're doing to make this as real as possible is the three characters have profiles—they're actually business pages—but we make them looks like profile pages as much as possible. We actually created a Facebook script that enriches the story that is on the microsite so you can find further information. The most interesting function of it is that you can communicate with them in real-time on Facebook. You can write a post and whenever the character's supposed to be on Facebook, they will reply to you."

Seeing as the microsite content is being constantly updated, those paying attention will know immediately when a new text message or even an occasional phone call is received. "Whenever a character gets a message—this happens in real-time—you can sit there all day if you want and wait for new messages to come in," says Brandt. "You'll hear a typical text message beep. With the calls, we hint people before the call comes in the emails and a couple of the text messages [on the site]. The phone actually rings and you can listen to the call—it's not a live call obviously—but you can basically listen in real-time when it's supposed to happen."

Nokia: Somebody Else's Phone
While the 60-second TV spot is already in rotation and print ads are set to be unveiled, the digital component is still the driving force of "Supernova." With banner ads being launched on (yet-to-be-revealed) lifestyle sites, W+K has already launched a widget to further involve the audience in the stories. "Since a lot of people spend 1-2 hours on Facebook everyday," says Brandt, "we want to give them a chance to experience the microsite, so we basically created a miniature version. You can grab the widget and [embed] it into your MySpace or Facebook page, iGoogle or blog. All of your friends will see that you follow this story and they can add it to their Facebook page, so then we can create this viral effect."

Before the Supernova effort winds down in the first week of December, W+K will unveil 3750 different pieces of mobile media content. As the storylines draw to a close, visitors can interact and help influence the ending for each character, who will be facing crucial life decisions. While the promotional aspect is obviously important, Brandt says it's the story-driven approach that ultimately counts with this Nokia campaign. "Our goal was to make it as close to what our audience is doing these days. We don't just want to collect hits; we want people to enjoy the story. So, we think this is a way better approach than putting up billboards everywhere. We want to communicate with the audience in their channels."
